Ancient volcanic geology
The Lebombo or Lubombo Mountains extend through South Africa, eSwatini and Mozambique. Their volcanic rocks are associated with the Karoo volcanic episode during Gondwana’s breakup, approximately 180 million years ago.
Jozini lies in northern KwaZulu-Natal, close to Mozambique and eSwatini. It is a landscape of steep volcanic escarpments and open lowlands, a large dam and ancient river channels, wildlife reserves and working communities, modern roads and archaeological evidence reaching back more than 200,000 years.
It is best understood as a meeting place between the Lebombo Mountains, the Pongola River and Pongolapoort gorge, Lake Jozini, the Makatini Flats, wildlife corridors and the routes east towards Maputaland and the Indian Ocean.
Jozini Local Municipality forms part of the uMkhanyakude District Municipality and covers approximately 3,073 square kilometres, with 23 municipal wards and seven Traditional Authority areas according to municipal planning information. It lies alongside Umhlabuyalingana, Big Five Hlabisa, uPhongolo, Mozambique and eSwatini, and includes rural settlements linked by the N2 and other regional routes.
Older sources may use “Swaziland”; current writing uses eSwatini, retaining the historical name only when identifying an older document. Jozini is a gateway between the interior, the Lebombo escarpment, the Pongola water system and the coastal areas farther east.
The municipal explanation associates Jozini with “place of spears,” linking the name to spears found in caves and ancient conflict. This is presented as a local explanation, not an unquestionable linguistic conclusion. Its value is that it opens a conversation about caves, weapons, conflict and memory.

The rocks include basalt and rhyolite. Uranium-lead dating of Jozini Formation rhyolite gives an age of approximately 182.1 ± 2.9 million years.
Lava flows, explosive eruptions, ash, welded ignimbrites, fractures, uplift, faulting, weathering, erosion and river incision all contribute to the landscape visible today.
The human story at Border Cave reaches back more than 200,000 years, while the rock in which the cave formed is almost a thousand times older than the human archaeological record.
The escarpment provides high rocky ground while the Lowveld is warmer and lower. The Pongola River cuts through the system, and the Pongolapoort gorge creates a natural route through the mountain barrier. The wider landscape opens towards the Makatini Flats, the Maputaland coastal plain, wetlands, lakes and the Indian Ocean.
Rivers, animals, people, tools, shells, plants and information move through these corridors. A single regional story can move from Jurassic volcanic rock to Pleistocene cave life, a modern dam, wildlife and contemporary communities.
Lake Jozini is the popular name for the reservoir created by Pongolapoort Dam. The dam was constructed across the Pongola River in the early 1970s, with municipal information giving completion as 1974.
The dam primarily supports water supply and irrigation on the Makatini Flats, including sugar cane, maize and cotton.
It changed river flow, water access, transport routes, floodplain ecology, fishing, farming, grazing and tourism. It is infrastructure with social and ecological consequences, not only a scenic lake.
Boat trips, tiger fishing and wildlife viewing are real parts of the visitor experience, but the page must also explain the altered natural river system and the distribution of costs and benefits downstream.
Downstream lies a low-lying ecosystem linked to seasonal flooding. A 2018 environmental-flow study describes approximately 13,000 hectares, broad alluvial plains known locally as madotsheni, approximately 65 named pans and 25 unnamed pans.
Before regulation, flood timing supported fishing, flood-recession cultivation, grazing, wildlife habitat, wetland vegetation and water storage. After regulation, the timing and size of releases became a major management issue. Carefully designed releases can support traditional fishing and grazing without necessarily preventing other uses.
Water is not only a volume to store or deliver. The timing of a flood can change fish breeding, grazing, planting, soil moisture and access to food.
The regional story should ask who controls infrastructure, who benefits from irrigation and who carries the cost of altered flood patterns.
Jozini is not an empty wilderness around a dam. It is a rural region with communities, traditional authorities, agriculture, tourism and conservation areas. The area includes Zulu-, Swazi- and Thonga-speaking people, among others, and municipal information identifies seven Traditional Authority areas.
Freshwater ecosystem services are not distributed equally. Communities may depend on fish, grazing, crops, household water, transport or cultural life, while other users depend on regulated water for agriculture or tourism. The site should explain governance without assuming that every authority, department or community has the same role.
Jozini is near the Lebombo Mountains, Pongola River, Jozini Dam, Ndumo and uMkhuze. The wider area is associated with wildlife, birding, Big Five conservation and more than 420 bird species according to municipal tourism material.
Wildlife corridors cross boundaries, but movement is affected by fences, roads, settlement, agriculture and protected-area boundaries. Jozini is a working landscape where conservation, communities, farming, water and tourism overlap.
Border Cave is a rock shelter on the Lebombo escarpment near Ingwavuma, within the wider Jozini region. Its archaeological record reaches back approximately 200,000 years or more and includes human remains, tools, bone tools, fire, grass bedding, plants, animal remains, ochre, beads and Middle and Later Stone Age material.

Southern Africa did not have a continental ice sheet covering the Lebombo Mountains. Cold, warm, wet, dry and windy phases formed part of the global glacial-interglacial system. The Last Glacial Maximum occurred approximately 26,000–19,000 years ago, when sea level was roughly 120–130 metres lower than today.
The Port Durnford Formation was deposited during older Pleistocene coastal episodes. The last ice age did not create it as a whole, but lower sea level and changed climate affected coastline, sediment movement, dunes and habitats. Later sea-level rise reshaped lagoons, estuaries, interdune wetlands and groundwater systems. Border Cave records inland life; Port Durnford records coastal and lagoonal history. They are regional comparisons, not a causal chain.
Respect communities, traditional authority structures, heritage sites, caves, graves, artefacts and wildlife. Use local guides and businesses where possible, follow access rules and do not publish sensitive archaeological or wildlife locations without permission.
